Aladdin rehearsals

Despite two storm days in a row, we will carry on with a FULL CAST rehearsal, after school tomorrow, January 29th, from 2:35 to 3:45, and again a rehearsal for the FULL CAST on Sunday, February 1st, 4-6pm. Thank you for your continued support and commitment to this musical experience!

Students’ thoughts on why music matters…

1. “Music is our future, so let’s raise it right! (Sadie)

2. “Music matters to me because it brings joy and happiness to my life, especially around the holidays. If you have a success story in music, you have a success story in life.  Music is fun! Music is my future! (Emma)

3. “Music Matters to me because a life without music is a life without hope, love and happiness, Music is anything you want it to be. It’s the tears that fall down your face. It can be happiness and laughter. Life isn’t complete without music. You need it to pick you back up. Music makes you jump up and down, smile, and dance. It’s a feeling that you can’t explain. Music is everything to me. You can be, “Happy”(Pharell Williams) and have “Fun, Fun, Fun” (Beach boys)! (Gerry)

4. “I love music!

I’m guessing you do too!

We love music!

We do it for you!

And, why do we do it?

Emotions run through!” (Andrew)

5. “NUFSICISUM! Does anyone know that that means?                                                                                                                                                               We’ll, I’ll tell you! Nufsicisum is three words spelled backwards: MUSIC IS FUN!” (Katie)

6. “Music matters to me because it is a great way to express your emotions and your religion. Music is a way to communicate. Success in music means success in life! Music helps you with numeracy and literacy because music is based on sound, symbols and patterns. Music is a universal language. I like music. I can’t imagine life without it!” (Cloe)

Music Lesson, Thursday, January 22nd, 2015

Music Lesson beginning on Thursday, January 22nd, 2015

How can you monitor student progress while encouraging creative, musical play? Create learning stations!

Students will spend a couple classes in small groups moving from one of the six stations to the other, refining their own skills, learning from others accomplishments, collaborating with their classmates, and having creative fun in the process!

Station 1: Ukulele Prep Party #1: Practice the following chord pattern on the ukulele, which is the introduction of the Lumineer’s song, “Ho Hey”:  C C C F.                                                                    When able to keep a steady beat even when changing from C to F, add the following strumming pattern: Down, Down, up-down, up-down, Down (repeat)

Station 2: Note Naming Guru: Complete a “Fill in the Missing Letters” sheet, by reading notes on the musical staff to give hints! Then try your note naming skills to complete a “crossword puzzle style” test sheet!

Station 3: Melody Machine: Place magnets on the musical staff to create your own melody. Then, conduct students in your group who will read  these notes and play them on the soprano, alto and bass xylophones. Switch roles which each student.

Station 4: Pattern Pro: Observe each of the five pictures provided, looking for patterns in colour, texture and mood. Choose the one picture that’s your favourite. Using the cube-a-link blocks, represent the patterns you see in that picture.

Station 5: Ukulele Prep Party #2:Practice the following chord pattern on the ukulele, which is the chorus of “Highway of Heroes”.                                                                                                                   G G – C C – F F- C-C,

G G – C C – F F – G G,

G G – C C – F F- C-C,

G G – C C – F F – G.

Station 6: Mood Music

Identify the mood of the people in the two pictures provided. Create a short composition in “A B A B” form on a metallophone that reflects these moods. Call your composition that reflects the emotion of the first face, the “A” section; your composition of the second face, the “B” section. With the other students in your group, decide who will perform their A section and who will perform the “B” section. Play through twice.

Music Classroom Activity: January 19th, 2015

WHO IS YOUR HERO?

Today is a holiday in the United States in recognition of Martin Luther King Jr., and what he did to promote equality among all people. Students discussed his contribution to humanity, as well as the contribution of others, such as Rosa Parks, Irena Sendler, and a Medic from the Canadian Armed Forces.

Students shared who their “heroes” were! Many students mentioned their mom, dad, sister, brother, aunt, uncle or grand-parents! At the end of the class, we watched the Cape Breton band perform, “Highway of Heroes” and began practicing the   C, G and F chords on the ukulele to play along with the chorus. (These three chords will come in handy for many great songs!)

Below are pictures of famous heroes:

(I wish I could post pictures of all parents of Stratford students! You are heroes to your children!)
